Enjoy a more youthful appearance by reducing or eliminating lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, scars, and sagging skin with radio frequency skin tightening.

Radio Frequency (RF) therapy is a non-invasive method of skin tightening by exposing the skin to radiofrequency heat.

It’s a painless process, and requires no downtime.

RF is ideal for people with mildly sagging skin, smile lines, laugh lines, crow’s feet, and crepey skin on the neck and face. It can also be used to tighten skin on other parts of the body, like the abdomen or thighs, and can reduce the appearance of scars, pores, and stretch marks.

How Does RF Work?

RF therapy tightens skin by accelerating the production of collagen, the main structural protein found in your skin and connective tissues that keeps your skin full and strong. Collagen is essential for radiant, youthful skin.

Every year after age 20, the amount of collagen you produce drops one percent. Your skin slowly loses strength and shape, and it can’t repair itself. This is when wrinkling and sagging begin to appear. Smoking and too little sleep can also hasten collagen loss.

While collagen loss is inevitable with age, RF can double your production of  collagen.

It can also increase your production of elastin, the protein that’s the main constituent of elastic connective tissue in the dermis, by five times.

RF also increases your hyaluronic acids, which are polysaccharide molecules important to connective tissue.

RF, through a safe and low frequency electrical current, has the ability to penetrate into the dermis (the deeper layer of skin), where it increases the vibrational energy of the water content, causing a rise in skin temperature.

Collagen and elastin then begin to deconstruct and break apart. Macrophage cells collect the broken parts, new cells are created, and collagen fibers are tightened. This allows for gentle tightening of the skin structure without causing damage to the top layer.

Skin will look lifted and you will notice a slight firming and plumpness to your skin even after one treatment, however multiple sessions are recommended to achieve the best results.

Risks & Side Effects

Radiofrequency skin tightening is not as complicated as many other cosmetic treatments. It is much more gentle, non-invasive, and won’t cause any skin damage, like some chemical peels. For sensitive skin, RF skin tightening can be beneficial. This is also a great option for those with darker skin.

It is recommended to have no more than one treatment per month. It is also important to wait at least one month after having any type of microneedling, chemical peel, dermal fillers or wrinkle reducers. This will avoid adverse side effects or risks.

RF by itself is extremely safe and does not usually cause any side effects. However, it is possible to experience temporary or mild swelling, redness, and tingling depending on the area of treatment. This should diminish within 3 days after treatment.

RF Contraindications

Radiofrequency (RF), skin tightening uses an electric current to reduce wrinkles. Although it might sound frightening to use electrical currents on your skin, the frequency used in radiofrequency (RF) skin tightening is safe.

However, it is not recommended that those with pacemakers, defibrillators, or facial implants undergo RF therapy, because even low levels of electrical current can cause interference with the functionality of these types of devices.

Patients with redundant skin will not see the desired results. Patients who have rosacea will experience exacerbated symptoms after radio frequency treatments.

What to Expect from Your RF Sessions

Radiofrequency skin tightening isn’t painful. In fact, radiofrequency treatments can be very comfortable. Patients report feeling light pressure and a warm, tingly sensation.

To get the best results, you should plan for three to eight treatments over the course of as many months, as one treatment per month is optimal.

Depending on your target areas, the treatment usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes.

New collagen growth is not immediate. After your session, your skin will tighten more over the next six months.
